How to make an iced tea with fruit

It’s super easy to make this fruit infused iced tea recipe from simple ingredients.

1. Pour fresh water from the tap into your kettle. (I use an electric kettle, which is a MUST if you’re a tea drinker.)

2. Then pour the boiling water over the tea bag and let brew for 5 minutes.

3. Remove tea bag, squeeze, and let the tea cool for 30 minutes. (Some people feel squeezing a tea bag makes the tea bitter. I’ll leave it to your better judgment.)

To simplify the ice tea making process, I use a 2-Quart Takeya Iced Tea Maker. I keep the tea brewing in this and cool it down in the refrigerator.

4. Pour cooled tea into a pitcher.

5. Add your favorite no-calorie sweetener and stir.

6. Add cold water and fruit. Then serve in glasses filled with fruit and ice cubes (if needed).

What type of sweetener?

This is the perfect drink to use a no-calorie sweetener like powdered monk fruit sweetener or Swerve Sweetener.

You can also use a no-calorie liquid sweetener or some sugar-free simple syrup. All of these easily dissolve in cold drinks.

What type of fruit?

The fun thing about fruit tea recipes is that you can add your favorite fruit. Use whatever’s in season or on sale.

Besides melon try grapes, oranges, berries, sliced fresh strawberries, or peaches.

Or try frozen fruit, which is very convenient since it’s already prepared. (Make tropical iced tea with a tropical fruit blend!)

The best part is that the frozen fruit keeps your iced tea cold as it thaws.

What type of tea?

I love making ice tea with Lipton Gallon Size Iced Tea Bags. There’s no need to unwrap and remove the tags from 10-12 individual black tea bags.

The large bags are perfect for making sun tea in a large gallon glass container, too. A box of Lipton Iced Tea and two glasses of iced tea with yellow and green straws.

If you’re a fan of Starbucks iced teas, save money by making your own in the Takeya Flash Chill Tea Maker:

Unlike the Lipton bags, the TAZO teas come in quart-sized tea bags. Double up the bags if you’re using the 2-Quart Takeya Iced Tea Maker or increase your brew time.

Other teas

Besides Lipton tea, here are other teas you can try:

  • herbal tea
  • other varieties of black tea like English Breakfast or Earl Grey
  • decaffeinated black tea
  • ginger tea
  • white tea
  • green tea
  • rooibos tea

Recipe variations

Add different flavors to your tea such as:

  • a lemon slice or a squirt of lemon juice
  • fresh mint
  • passion fruit juice or passion fruit pulps
  • orange slices
  • basil leaves
  • cold coconut water instead of the regular water
  • pomegranate seeds
  • apple juice
  • orange juice
  • pineapple juice

Note: adding juices and coconut will add calories to this recipe.

How to serve ice tea

Serve this cold drink in a large pitcher. Then place the fruit in a tall glass of iced tea before pouring.  Serve with colorful straws.

You can also serve this delicious iced tea recipe in mason jars.

The perfect iced tea for cold & flu season

When I lived in the south, I learned that everyone drinks sweetened iced tea (sweet tea) year-round.

But no matter where you live, it’s handy to have a refreshing ice tea recipe during cold and flu season when you need to stay hydrated.

Sometimes when I get winter colds, I switch it up between hot tea and iced tea.

Iced tea makes a sore throat feel better. Plus, the fruit gives you a bit of vitamin c.
