How to manage your diabetes with exercise

exercising woman Today’s guest post about the benefits of exercise for people with type 2 diabetes is by Su Rollins of Hypoglycemic Diet Blog.

How does exercise effect glucose levels?

Did you know that you can easily manage your diabetes just by engaging in exercise? Exercise has a positive effect on the glucose levels of those suffering from type 2 diabetes. When you exercise, you expend a lot of energy from the glucose found in your muscles. At first, the body simply uses up the glucose that is traced from your muscles’ glycogen. Since this glucose is found in your bloodstream, exercising helps your blood glucose levels not get lower.

Additionally, your body also releases additional glucagon and hormones. These are important because they break down your liver’s stored fats, turning it into more glucose that you can expend. Exercising helps your body improve and develop a better sensitivity to insulin. It also allows you to be more in control of your glycemic index.

Why is exercise’s effect on glucose levels important to those with type 2 diabetes?

Exercise has a positive effect on a patient’s glucose level. This is good news for people who have type 2 diabetes. Research indicates that patients of diabetes gain more control over their glycemic as soon as they get used to a regular exercise program. On the other hand, people who do not engage in exercise find no improvement in their glycemic control. Since exercise improves your insulin sensitivity, you will also need less medicine  to control blood sugar levels.

Experts recommend that people who have type 2 diabetes should exercise around two and a half hours (usually only moderate aerobic activity) three days a week. Alternately, they could also do only vigorous aerobic activity for 90 minutes

What type of exercise is best for type 2 diabetes patients?

In light of this, the frequency of the routine is more important that the kind of exercise one does. Research shows that there are benefits from both weight training as well as aerobic activity.

When should patients be discouraged from exercising?

Some patients have a higher risk of developing injuries from an intense exercise program. Such patients include those with higher cardiovascular risk, those over the age of 35, and those leading sedentary lifestyles. These patients should be thoroughly evaluated before beginning a new exercise program. Also, patients with severely low blood sugar levels should wait until their condition improves.
