By now you must have heard about the study that showed that women who drink alcohol have an increased cancer risk. Between that and the economy, I might as well just end it all now. But seriously, during these stressful times, we need to find inexpensive ways to enjoy ourselves. If a glass of wine does that for you, nothing wrong with savoring every single calorie of it.
Redwood Creek – more bottle for your buck
One brand of wine that fits the bill of delicious and inexpensive is Redwood Creek. I was sent two bottles to try, the Redwood Creek 2006 Pinot Noir and the Redwood Creek 2007 Pinot Grigio:
Redwood Creek 2006 Pinot Noir – This wine has ripe cherry aromas with hints of brown spice and soft tannins.
Redwood Creek 2007 Pinot Grigio - This fruity Pinot Grigio has an excellent acid balance and fresh floral aromas. Red apple and peach flavors burst onto the palate. Winemaker Cal Denison blended in several white varieties—Chardonnay, French Colombard, Viognier and Gewurtztraminer— giving the wine unique, expressive flavors.
The wine retails for around $7.99. (I got it on sale for $6.99.) Redwood Creek wines are a perfect, inexpensive treat for those tough days when you want to indulge.
Cooking with wine recipes
Redwood Creek’s gorgeous website features several outdoor recipes like Cedar Plank Salmon with Wild Blueberry Salsa. You don’t need a campfire to enjoy these – most can be cooked up on the grill. And don’t forget to check out the Bacon-Wrapped Elk Tenderloin Medallions recipe that won the Redwood Creek Wine's Northwest Campfire Classic contest. The Denver Post featured Jack Christensen of Castle Rock’s recipe, and it’s tantalizing.
(Remember, an 8 ounce glass of wine is worth 2 Weight Watchers POINTS. And yes, every point of Redwood Creek wine is worth it.)
