At the Quaker Oatmeal event I learned how foods rich in antioxidants, Omega-3 fats, and fruit flavonoids were great for heart health.
So when Regeneration USA asked me to try out their Anti-Aging Whole Food Bars, I was intrigued. The bar contains high levels of key nutrients with healthy inflammation response (Vitamin C-Ester & Omega 3, 6, 9), powerful fruit flavonoids, and low-glycemic organic ingredients. It also has an extremely high ORAC value concentration of 7800.
What’s an ORAC value?
ORAC stands for (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). ORAC measures the total antioxidant power of foods and nutrients. The National Institute on Aging developed the ORAC method and the US Department of Agriculture and Brunswick Laboratories perfected the ORAC assay procedure and testing various foods to determine ORAC levels.
Higher levels of ORAC in food equate to greater levels of antioxidants which in turn protect our bodies from “free radicals” which are known to be the main culprit of aging.
Scientific research from Tufts University evaluated the antioxidant needs of the average person PLUS the antioxidant power (ORAC) of fruits and vegetables. Their research has concluded that we need approximately 5,000 ORAC Units per day to have a significant impact on plasma and tissue antioxidant capacity. Consumption of a minimum of three servings of fruits and vegetables per day provides approximately 1200 ORAC Units. This means the average person is short approximately 3800 ORAC Units each day, depending on the fruits and vegetables they are choosing.
What’s special about the Regeneration Anti-Aging Whole Food Bar?
Regeneartion Anti-Aging Whole Food Bars have been certified by Brunswick Laboratories to contain 7800 ORAC units per bar. That’s a whole lot of nutrition packed into one meal or snack!
Regeneration does not use processed sugar, corn syrup, salt, hydrogenated oils, genetically modified foods, preservatives, or synthetic sweeteners. Instead, they’re made with all-natural super high ORAC antioxidant foods like goji berries, blueberries, cranberries, mulberries, grapes, pomegranate, acai, mangosteen, agave nectar, almonds, jiaogulan tea, pistachio nuts, C-Ester, and Omega 3,6,9.
Worth the cost?
The bars were delicious, moist and had the usual slight grittiness of other nutritional bars. They come in two flavors: Original (which is berry flavored) and Regenerating Cocoa Brownie. Nutritionally, each bar is 220 calories, has 8g of fat, 34g of carbs, 4g fiber, and 6g of fiber. If you’re doing a Weight Watchers, each bar has 4 POINTS.
Currently, you can buy Regeneration’s Anti-Aging Whole Food Bar online for $47.99 for a case of 12. At $3.99 each, they’re expensive, but cheaper than buying a whole bunch of different supplements and juices – and a lot tastier.
These would be an ideal meal substitute or occasional snack. You are getting a powerful nutritional wallop and if you’ve priced acai berry or pomegranate juices lately, it’s comparable in cost. I think it’s worth adding the bars to your diet if you aren’t taking high ORAC value supplements or consistently eating high ORAC value fruits and vegetables.
