Go green at your next party with Verterra compostable dinnerware

When I was blogging at The Big Tent during the Democratic National Conference a couple of weeks ago, I was very impressed by the biodegradable tableware that was used during the meals I had there. Plates, cups, cutlery and napkins made of corn starch and plant-based materials were provided by EcoProducts, composted by Rocky Mountain Recycling, and taken to A-1 organics to be turned into rich topsoil.

verterra platters large Cool right? So when the Family Review Network asked me to review VerTerra dinnerware, I was interested in checking it out. I received a couple of their 6" and 9" square platters. A 12 pack (6 of each) goes for $12.95. More expensive than paper plates, but much more eco-friendly. They also carry bowls and plates.

(Yes, VerTerra is more expensive than EcoProducts’s dishes. Then again, EcoProducts minimum order is a case – 500 to 1000 plates – at $65 to $75. Great if you’re running a restaurant, but not practical for home use. And VerTerra’s products are much more attractive.)

VerTerra: attractive, eco-friendly, reusable and durable

The VerTerra dinnerware collection consists of a variety of eco-friendly plates, bowls, cups, and platters made from 100% renewable and compostable plant matter and water. Unlike plastic and paper plates, no chemicals, waxes or dyes are use.

VerTerra dinnerware is attractive. They’re made out of fallen leaves. Steam, heat and pressure to transform the leaves into durable products that will naturally biodegrade in two months. They have an Asian/Polynesian flare and would be great for a luau, Chinese, Thai or sushi party.

While VerTerra calls their dinnerware single-use, you can reuse them. According to VerTerra’s FAQ, just gently wipe your dishes with warm soapy water to clean. However, keep in mind that they will need to dry and that some foods, such as tomato sauces and beets, may slightly stain the dishes,

Verterra is durable, too. You can use them in the the microwave, cool in the fridge or freezer, or heat VerTerra in the microwave for up to 2 minutes or in an oven up to 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

VerTerra products are made in South Asia, where their employees receive fair wages in safe working conditions and are provided access to healthcare. Their products are cleaned and sterilized in their factory no less than three times, so you can serve meals on them straight out of the package – no rinsing necessary.

If you’re interested in green, compostable dinnerware for parties, check out VerTerra for affordable, attractive single-use plates, bowls, and platters. I’ll be using them at my next party, too!

Wow, what a thorough, well done review! I consult for Verterra, if anybody has questions about their products, I’d be happy to answer. Will keep track of this post and follow up.

I thought for a moment you were saying that you had to order a minimum of a case of Verterra, then realized you were talking about Ecoproduct’s products. I got a set of these two months ago and am still using all of them. When you factor in their durability, lack of toxins, ability to easily compost, and just plain coolness, they’re indeed worth the money.

Paul, great to hear from someone who works with the company. I looked over the post and made some edits for clarity – the way I wrote it was misleading. Thanks for the feedback.
