Way back when before I read The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
, milk was just, well, milk. I didn’t care if it was organic, hormone free, or shipped in from California. It just had to be cheap and no fat.
Then we went to Switzerland last May, and we drank real milk. Even the Weight Watcher’s no fat milk tasted better than our usual brand. Somehow it was creamier, richer and didn’t taste like water with stuff it in.

As long as you are ok with the fact that Horizon bends the rules on organic farming, then enjoy. But perhaps you’d like to research the company a bit better before filling your milk glass.
Tiah, I know the concerns some people have about Horizon Dairy. But speaking on a practical level, what’s the alternative at your local grocery store – the place where most people shop? The closest health food store is a 40-minute round trip for me. Whole Foods is a 1.5 hour round trip. My local grocer, which has a very good health food section, carries Horizon and their own store brand of organic milk. That’s it – industrial organic dairy milk. It’s probably the same for most people. Instead, I’ve decided to go with my local dairy, which isn’t organic, but doesn’t use hormones. It’s family owned and I like their mission and values. I’m lucky to live in an area with several local dairies. Most people don’t have that option. Complain all you want about Horizon but there isn’t much of an alternative.
