The only thing I don't like about joining gyms are the contracts. I finally managed to join one that lets you pay on a weekly basis without being locked in...which means I can cancel at any time. I like the flexibility. By the way, this is a great blog. Hope you can check mine out at some point: http://www.only-cookware.com/blog/

I love Katieo's tip about negotiating - excellent suggestion!! And like we both said, do the math. Our local rec center's drop in fees are much lower than hers. Since we don't go all that often (and when we do, it's to use the pool) it's a better deal for us to pay the $4.25 drop in fee for adults and the $2.75 for kids

Hi there! I think these are great suggestions. However, for us, the daily fee ($10) is MUCH more expensive than buying a contract EVEN WITH all the missed days or slacked off weeks. If you're in this situation though, you can still save loads of money by talking them down. I talked the sales guys down over $100 on a yearly membership. I also didn't agree to pay ANY "proccessing" fees, Which saved me another $120. For me it was easy, I just threatened to go to the other gym in town, with the same offer. THey eventually gave me that FANTASTIC price for my membership. My sister did the same thing and got free daycare included. (Oh, and maybe I should say too, I DO go to the gym 5 days out of the week..I think your other suggestions are very valuable!)
