Some of these may seem obvious if you like to cook. Sadly, many people don’t and they rely on instant food or take out (probably why they gained all that weight!) Relearning how to eat and cook is part of successful weight loss. So before you start your diet, make sure you have these items on hand in your kitchen:
1. Measuring spoons – Get several sets to place around your kitchen. I have a traditional round set in a drawer by the refrigerator and the set of 6 RSVP Spice Measuring Spoons by the stove. The skinny retangular shape of these spoons makes it easy to measure spices right out of the bottle. I also use the large tablespoon one to measure out my Cream of Wheat each morning. It’s the only measuring spoon I have that fits right into the hole in the box.
Amazon carries a huge selection of measuring spoons. If I had to buy new ones, I’d get the Nigella Lawson Measuring Spoons.
Her six-piece set features a 1 dsp., which is equal to 2 tsp. – an amount that often comes up on Extreme Fat Smash recipes – and a pinch spoon.
2. Measuring cups – When it comes to portion control, most people are way off when they guesstimate. You really need to use your measuring cups faithfully to keep to your diet goals. Again, I like to keep a couple of sets around the kitchen. I also have two large Pampered Chef measuring cups – a 1 quart and a 2 quart – that can be used as mixing bowls. They’re similar to the Pyrex Prepware 4-Cup Measuring Cup with Lid and can be used in the microwave or to store food in the refrigerator. Check out Amazon’s large variety of measuring cups
.
3. Digital scale – So what does four ounces of fish look like anyway? A small digital scale is worth the investment. Amazon has several very attractive digital scales for under $30 including a lime green Escali Primo Digital Multifunctional Scale
. (It also comes in orange, chrome, navy, red, black and PINK!) Weight Watchers also sells a very nice digital at their meeting centers that many members swear by.
4. Vegetable steamer – We all need to eat more veggies, so try steaming them. My sister uses a counter top steamer, like the Black & Decker Food Steamer, which works out well in her small kitchen. My stove top pots came with a steamer insert, which is wonderful for cooking up large amounts of vegetables. For smaller amounts, I like using the GLAD Simply Cooking microwave steaming bags.
5. Electric kettle – I drink a lot of tea when I’m trying to lose weight. Tea fills me up and keeps me from overeating. Plus, there are many health benefits to green tea, one of my favorites. I have a Chef’s Choice Cordless Electric 1-3/4-Quart Teakettle. It’s full proof. Just fill it up and press down the lever. When the water is hot, it automatically turns off so you don’t accidentally burn up your kettle…and your kitchen.

I’d never considered getting a food steamer, but it’d certainly make me more likely to eat vegetables with my dinner!
Another important one to remember: Non-stick cookware! As long as you use non-stick you can avoid using oil or butter – I personally like the Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick.
That is a handy and clever list. Of all the items on it, I find my scale is the biggest surprise – I never expected it to be as handy as it turned out to be. Of course, it is handiest for weigh flour for, oh, bread and, erm, sometimes, yeah, ok, cake.
Sigh. I try!
Cheers!
Great tip with the measuring spoons that FIT into the containers! I love this, so simple, yet overlooked constantly. I believe I “eyeball” things much too often because of convenience. Thanks again for the great advice!
