I had the pleasure of meeting Retro-Food.com‘s blogger at the food blogger breakout session at BlogHer. Since she prefers to stay anonymous both on her blog and on her business cards, I won’t indentify her in the picture. But it was fun meeting Retro-Food.com because I’m a huge fan of her site. (And she of mine…ain’t that neat.)
Retro-Food.com features recipes from her retro cookbook collection, and as its tag line says, "Just like mama made." Yes, indeed, especially if she was reading women’s magazines in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.
I especially like Retro-Food.com‘s Monthly Menu from The Modern Family Cookbook feature. And her cake pictures crack me up.
Since I run a children’s books and food blog at ClubMom – A Readable Feast – I’m especially interested in children’s cookbooks. Retro-Food.com has inspired me to keep a look out for vintage ones at used bookstores and antique malls from now on.
I hope you find this recipe for Ya-hoo Salad as inspring. After all everything is better with Jell-O, and recipes that rhyme are divine!
Ya-hoo Salad
Ingredients:
- 1 (3-oz.) package lemon flavored gelatin
- 1¼ cups water
- 1 cup canned crushed pineapple
- lettuce, rinsed in cold water
- 5 cherries
Directions:
Heat water in a saucepan until it boils; then pour it into the pie pan.
Stir gelatin into hot water. Ya-hoo!
(Keep fingers away from the steam as you do.)
Set pan in the icebox and chill through and through.
An hour, and it will be wiggle-de-goo.
Add pineapple to it and stir it. Ya-hoo!
Put back into icebox and say, "Toodle-ooo!"
When firm, place on lettuce and serve to a few.
As soon as they taste it, they will be proud of you!
Top each salad with a bright red cherry. Serves 5.
