How to make a golf cake

Here's the final cake being enjoyed by Monkey Boy at his party. He loved it. I think the adults were more impressed than the kids however.

Cake8

The cake making went very well, though my husband said I should have put the t-box a little to the left. It took about five hours to assemble and frost the cake. The baking and making the frosting was another hour. Add another two hours for ingredient shopping and cleanup, and you have a total of eight hours - or a full day - to make it. Now you know why upscale (i.e., non-grocery store) cakes are so expensive.

Click below to see how I put the cake together.

Cake1
I used a large square cake pan but wanted a rectangular cake (easier to transport since I had a large rectangular cake box). So I cut off the side and stuck it on top. The raised areas are the pieces of cake I had cut off when I leveled the cake.
Cake2
Then I frosted it all over with the green buttercream frosting. I made the fairway as smooth as possible.
Cake3
I used piping gel with blue food coloring for the lake. For the grass, I used darker green frosting (stiffer than the green I used to frost the cake) and a star tip on the piping bag. Light brown sugar was used in the sand trap. I spooned it in and tapped it down with the back of the spoon.
Cake4
Here's the finished piece with green and t-box, which I should have made squarer and smaller per the golfers in the family. Oh well.
Cake5
These are the Wilton decorations I used. Not really reusable for future projects, except for the golf balls, which can hold new birthday candles. I think the golf bobble head (which unfortunately is made out of candle wax and very breakable) looks like my brother-in-law.
Cake6
The final piece!

This looks great! My son is 2 and he loves golf. We had a golf birthday for his last one and I think we may do another one. This cake looks very good. The best one I have seen yet.
