The One-Armed Cook

OnearmedThe One-Armed Cook: Quick and Easy Recipes, Smart Meal Plans, and Savvy Advice for New (and Not-So-New) Moms by Cynthia Stevens Graubart and  Catherine Fliegel will be the answer to many a new mom’s prayers. This spiral bound book (smart!) promises:

  • Superb recipes that can be made with a whisk in one hand and a baby cradled in the other.
  • Most recipes can be prepared, start-to-finish, in 30 minutes or less.
  • Appetizing menus for any season or occasion.
  • Game plans for success—stocking the pantry, filling the freezer, and dining out tips.
  • Comprehensive list of essential kitchen equipment sure to make cooking with baby in tow faster, easier, and more fun.
  • Tricks for preparing no-fail dinner parties and everyday meals, hosting family celebrations, and feeding weekend guests.
  • Sage advice for joyfully entering into motherhood, establishing family rituals, and keeping baby safe while working in the kitchen.

Oh how I needed this book when I had an infant in arms. Instead, I ate a lot of cereal straight out of the box with my one free hand for lunch. For dinner, I passed the baby to Big Bad Dad while I cooked. This would make a great present for a new mom, a new stay-at-home mom, or any mom who’s on the lookout to make her time in the kitchen easier. (Good reader reviews on Amazon.com, too.)

While Amazon.com, my usual vendor of choice, has it for $13.57, Jessica’s Biscuit has it for only  11.97! That’s 40% off the list price. (Free shipping on orders $25 or more, too!)

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. I love cooking gourmet meals, but for everyday dinners it’s perfect!

I’m so glad you mentioned this book. I ordered it from Amazon after first seeing it here. I have to confess, I can count on ONE hand the number of from-scratch meals I’ve prepared since my son was born two years ago. Before he came along, I was fixing recipes from Cooking Light magazine–they had too many ingredients and not enough payoff, considering the work involved. I needed a cookbook that promised quick, easy & delicious, and I think this’ll fit the bill. (I bet he’ll like the food, too!) I haven’t tried any of the recipes yet, but they definitely seem promising. I’m actually EXCITED about cooking!

Looks interesting. I’d buy it for the parenting collection at my library, but spiral bindings fall to pieces in no time.

I am very fond of the Desperation Dinners books. I don’t use all of the recipes, but there have been definite keepers, and a lot of the techniques used are worth trying.

Hi!

I would love a recipe book with “child friendly”, healthy lunches. Any suggestions?
