December 2004

I’ll be away for the holidays and hope to have lots of great stories of sushi in San Diego, character breakfast buffets at Disneyland, Christmas dinners at my mom’s house, late night rolled tacos with guacamole noshes, and the occasional stop at In-N-Out Burgers, too. Please visit the other cooking blogs on my Food Blogs [...]

First the good. My sister sent me Anthony Bourdain’s Les Halles Cookbook. It’s the only cookbook I have with cuss words in it. Anthony manages to drop the f-bomb at least every third page and extols the virtues of eating organ meats, fat and marrow. Needless to say, I love it. Thanks Michele! Then the [...]

(This originally appeared on the Inland Empress‘s site on September 24, 2004.) I made a tapenade (olive paste) today that really kicked tuchus. Thought I’d share. It’s a bit more complicated because of the whole food processor thing, but still doable in the 10-minute time limit. Anne’s seriously tasty tapenade small tube of goat cheese [...]

Having company or family over for Christmas is stressful enough without having to spend the whole day in the kitchen roasting a turkey and preparing elaborate side dishes. Spiral cut ham is a great option since it’s precooked and presliced. Just warm it up and use the included flavor packet to make a sauce. This [...]

The kids and I went to the Celestial Seasonings factory in Boulder last week. It was the closest place that carried their wonderful Candy Cane Lane Holiday Tea and Santa’s Candy Apple Kids’ Holiday Tea. The Candy Cane Lane tea tastes like you have literally dipped a candy cane in green tea. It’s decaf and [...]

When I found out that Chef Genuine was sick with a sore throat, I recommended drinking a hot toddie. Here’s the recipe: In a large travel mug (safety first around the kids!) put in 1 to 2 (or more) ounces of your favorite bourbon, lots of honey and lemon juice. If you have fresh ginger [...]

Chef Genuine and I were just discussing via email how much we love The Denver Post‘s Wednesday food section. Today’s issue was a thought provoking as usual. First, regarding the discussion of the BonJour Crème Brûlée Torch and two crème brûlée recipes. Save yourself the big bucks and buy a small butane plumber’s torch from [...]

I tried making the Pinwheel Cookies again, and this batch turned out even worse looking that the first ones. The cookies were cracked and not round. And the swirls got all goofed up again. Storing them is impossible because they crumble. But they’re still delicious and the raw dough is addictive. Some thoughts: A friend [...]

I just finished making the Pinwheel Cookies from Kraft’s recipe for 4-in-1 cookie dough. The dough was easy to make and absolutely delicious. Another benefit of this recipe (versus a traditional sugar cookie recipe) is that it’s egg-free for those allergic to eggs, or people like me who like to nibble on raw cookie dough. [...]
